It's totally natural." he replied, trying to calm him down. I didn't say anything. Inside I was bubbling over. Was I supposed to speak the truth, or lie to him like Kevin? He noticed my silence and called me out. "Something wrong Nick?" he asked me. "I'm sorry Joe, but I don't want you to do this without knowing it's exactly what you want to do." "Why are you doing this?" he shot back. "Why can't you just be happy for me?" "Why can't you understand I'm just looking out for you. I want you to be happy, and divorce isn't happy." "Why'd you have to throw around the D word." Kevin sighed in frustration. 'Take time to realize, That I am on your side. Didn't I, Didn't I tell you.' "I don't think you'll be happy with Forrest." I stated, simply. "I still think you love Carson, and it isn't fair to either of them to go through with this; and it isn't fair to yourself." "Since when did you know what was fair and unfair to myself? You're sitting here pining away for the one girl you've ever truly loved." he answered back, bitterly. "It's not the same." I defended. "She cheated on me." "Carson cheated on me. But you're still in pain, so either way, you're losing out." he pointed out. "Hey, just try not turning this back onto me for a minute here." I said, trying to re-focus the discussion. "Do you still have feelings for Carson?" I asked him, point blank. Silence ensued for a while until I realised I had to apologise. I'd never hear the end of it otherwise. "I'm sorry Joe." I offered. "I just want the best for you." "It's OK bro. I think we're all slightly jittery." he said, shrugging it off. Kevin walked back into the room, returning from checking on the service. "Mom, Dad, and Frankie are here, and the Pastor's all set to get you guys married." he informed us. "I suppose we're ready when you are. Are you ready?" he asked. 'But I can't spell it out for you, No it's never gonna be that simple. No I can't spell it out for you.' "I'm ready." he replied, standing from his seat and downing a shot of whisky. He headed for the door, trailing behind Kevin, and I quickly grabbed his arm. He turned to look at me, awaiting what I had to say. "Good luck Joe." I smiled, realising it wasn't my place anymore. "Thanks Nick." he said, grinning back. I walked behind them, but then Kevin pulled Joe to one side. "Listen Joe, I know Nick's on your case but there's something I've gotta ask you. Hayley told me you went to Carson and told her you loved her - the night you got engaged." he emphasised, in a shouty-whispery voice. "You then chose not to mention this to either me, or Nick. So really, all I want to know is, do you really wanna do this?" he asked. Silence. "Joe, if you don't want to do this, I'll drive you home, and it'll be a mistake to learn from. But if you go in there and marry that girl, you best damn well honour it, because she deserves every vow you're about to recite." he added, sternly. "I really wanna do this." Joe mumbled, pushing past both Kevin and I. "I hope he comes to his senses, before it's too late." Kevin grumbled, following after him. 'If you just realize what I just realized, Then you'd be perfect for each other, And will never find another. Just realized what I just realized, You'd never have to wonder if, You missed out on each other now.' Dayumm, that boy is hard work. So I have a really sore throat, college starts on thursday and to top it all off....I think I just ate an off-date cookie.
